Sodus Center Fire Department was first organized and founded in 1923. The all-volunteer unit had a hand-drawn chemical cart and 100 feet of hose. The fire district covered a small area of about ½ square mile, Sodus Center proper. At this time the population of Sodus Center was estimated at 300 people. The first fire chief was Fred Smith. When first organized there were about 30 members. Many of the current volunteers are children or grandchildren of former fire company members.
